Chris has been involved in academic support services at Washington State University for over 12 years. He is responsible for the overall direction and management of WSU’s comprehensive academic support program. Chris enjoys advising and counseling student-athletes regarding academic performance, course and major selection, graduation plans, time management, goal setting, career planning, and other skills necessary for academic success. As Associate Athletic Director, it is also Chris’ responsibility to ensure that all recruited, returning, and incoming transfers are properly advised with a graduation plan.

Chris graduated from Washington State University in 1992 with a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology. In 1996 Chris returned to the Palouse and earned his Masters in Education from the University of Idaho with an emphasis on teaching methods.

At home, Chris enjoys spending time with this wife Brenda and their three children (Byran Ethan, Kennedy Jean, and Liam Paul). When Chris is not grilling steaks on the barbeque, he enjoys pick-up hoops, downhill mountain biking, and an occasional round of golf.

Heather Erwin

Heather graduated from Washington State University in May 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.  She joined academic support services in August 2010 as a learning specialist and academic advisor for baseball, men's and women's golf, and soccer.

Heather is dedicated to helping student-athletes excel while building a strong foundation to become successful in their lives and future careers.  She works hard to build relationships in a positive learning environment where students can set goals and strive to succeed.  She also works with assessment, academic success plans, teaching, career paths, organization, and time management. 

Born and raised a Coug in Pullman, Washington Heather enjoys sports, spending time with friends and family, and anything outdoors.

Gail Gleason

Gail joined academic support services in August 2009 as a learning services coordinator and academic advisor for women's tennis. Gail’s primary responsibilities include student assessment, academic skill development, individualized planning and developing individual academic success plans, tracking individual progress, and teaching.

Gail is also an Ed.D. candidate at Washington State University with a focus on Instruction and Curriculum and hopes to complete her dissertation by December of 2012. Her area of research is the effectiveness using web conferencing technology for mentoring by connecting teachers from Washington with teachers in New Orleans.

Gail has two sons, Steve and Kyle, and one grandson, Finn Matthew. Steve who lives with his wife Michel in New Orleans, LA, played both football and baseball at WSU from 1995-2000 and also played for the New Orleans Saints. Kyle, his wife Kath and son Finn live in San Rafael, CA, where Kyle is a boat builder. Gail enjoys gardening, camping and hiking, water sports, skiing, and cycling.

Thad Hathaway

Thad graduated from the University of Idaho in 1997 with a Sport Science degree and began working at the Kibbie Dome until offered a graduate assistant position with the University of Idaho Athletic Department in the fall of 1998. One year later he accepted the Academic Program Advisor position for Athletics while working on his Masters in Recreation, emphasis in Sport Administration. He finished his Masters in the fall of 2002 and began working at WSU as the Senior Academic Counselor for Athletics. His role is to counsel, advise, support, develop, and enhance academic performance for student-athletes.

Thad’s team assignments include men's basketball and football. In the summer of 2012 Thad became the Director of Student-Athlete Development.

Athletics has always been a part of Thad’s life. He was a track and field athlete for two years at Eastern Oregon University before transferring to the University of Idaho to finish his degree and high jump for the Vandals.

Thad enjoys spending time with his family, golfing when he can find the time and hiking in the Wallowa Mountains. He lives in Pullman with his wife Diane, his daughter Alison, and his sons Cody, Caleb, Gabe, and Seth.

Derek Johnson

Derek joined the Student-Athlete Development staff as the Coordinator of Leadership Development and Advisor for Women’s Basketball and Football in February 2011. Prior to joining the staff at Washington State Derek worked at Montana State University and San Diego State University with multiple sport assignments. Derek enjoys working with student-athletes to improve their overall academic performance and experience through leadership and character development. Derek hopes to influence his student-athletes into have pride in earning their degrees, and understand how to become an authentic leader and role model for their respective teams and communities. 

Derek earned a B.A. in Ethnic Studies with a focus on Race Relations from the University of Hawaii in 2004 and his M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Pennsylvania State University in 2007. Derek is also former student-athlete for the University of Hawai’i as a member of the Football team. Football has always been a passion for Derek, as his father was a coach and player for the University of Michigan and older brother Stephen for the University of Pennsylvania.

Derek enjoys participating in other sports but growing up in Michigan his first love was hockey, which he continues to play during winter months still. Besides trying to find the time to play hockey, golf and softball Derek mostly enjoys spending his free time with his family Tess, and kids Alex and Chloe.

Tracy Keller

Tracy joined the Cougar family in August of 2010. His task is to supervise and maintain the ARC in addition to coordinating the tutorial program and providing academic support to the WSU men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. Tracy always enjoys working with student-athletes to improve academic performance, establish educational goals, practice time management techniques, select career paths, and develop the skills necessary for success in life.

Tracy has been in education since 2005. He began his career teaching business before making the transition into college athletics. He comes to WSU from Appalachian State University where he was the Assistant Compliance Officer. While working on his Masters he also served as a graduate assistant in the office of Academic Services for Student Athletes.

Tracy graduated from Appalachian State University in 2005 with a BS in Business Education. He completed his Masters in Higher Education Administration at Appalachian State in 2009.

Born and raised in Hickory, North Carolina, Tracy enjoys playing golf and spending time with friends and family.

Kari Sampson

Kari joined the Student Athletic Development Department in September of 2010.  As the Coordinator of Career and Personal Development, Kari is responsible for the management and coordination of student service programs that focus on career development, personal development, leadership development and community and campus outreach.  In addition, she is the academic advisor for rowing, swimming and volleyball.   Kari enjoys counseling  and advising student-athletes  regarding course and major selection, goal setting, career planning, and any other necessary skills imperative for academic, career, leadership and personal success. 

After graduating from Washington in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication, the Clarkston, Wash., native served as the Youth Director at the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston for three years.  In 2004, she joined the Cougar golf coaching staff as the Men’s and Women’s Assistant Golf Coach and coached for the Cougars for 5 seasons.

Outside of the office, Kari enjoys spending time with her husband Jason Sampson and their young daughter, Faith.   As a family, the Sampson’s enjoy all outdoor recreational activities including waterskiing, basketball,  tennis, downhill skiing, running and hanging out at the beach.  In particular, Kari and Jason love playing golf and teaching Faith the fundamentals of golf.

Wanda has been with WSU Athletics Student-Athlete Development since spring 1998. However, she has been on the WSU campus for more than twenty years both with the WSU Libraries and the WSU Foundation.

Wanda will try to answer all your "how to" questions--and help you navigate through WSU's official channels. She is responsible for compiling lots of data about WSU athletes and their academic and graduation successes so you may need to visit her for facts and figures for your reports and papers!

Wanda has four children—Dan, Sam, Desiree, and Keagan. Dan is a Washington State Patrol Officer, so don’t speed on your way to Seattle! And Sam is currently a member of the Cougar football team. Desi is in the 5th grade and Keagan the 4th at Jefferson Elementary in Pullman. Wanda especially enjoys the daily student-athlete contact and supporting y’all at Cougar sporting events.

She spends her time away from campus quilting and crafting, bowling, camping with her family, and ferrying her children to and from practices and competitions.
